Honours Science

Both the Honours Health Science and the Honours Pure and Applied Science profiles are a two-year pre-university program that students can directly apply to on their application. Once in Honours Science, you will participate in activities such as math or science competitions, attend interesting lectures and visit cutting-edge labs. A minimum of three courses out of your 12 required science courses will be enriched. In these enriched courses, you will take the same final exams as students enrolled in the regular courses. Marianopolis will provide an attestation certifying that you have taken enriched courses that you can include with your university applications.

As an Honours Science student, you can complete an Honours Science Project. You can participate in the local Science Fair, which, for many Marianopolis students, is a gateway to higher-level fairs and recognition. You will work under the supervision of a faculty member, your assigned mentor, and the results will count as the official Épreuve synthèse required by the Quebec Ministry of Education.

Marianopolis offers Science Honours profiles to provide its most motivated students an opportunity to cultivate their passion and talent for the sciences, within a stimulating and creative framework of courses and activities. As an Honours Science student you would have to maintain minimum averages of 82 % overall and 87 % in math and science courses at the College.

Who Should Take It?

The Marianopolis Honours Science profiles are specifically designed for students who have a strong interest in the sciences, are highly motivated and wish to engage in curricular and extra-curricular activities that will enrich their understanding of science and natural phenomenon.

Where Does It Lead?

Honours Science prepares you for university studies in Pure Sciences, Engineering, Architecture and other Applied Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and other specializations in the Health Sciences. It’s also excellent preparation for Mathematics and Computer Science as well as for careers in various research fields.

“Coming from a small high school, Marianopolis really opened my eyes. I met passionate, like-minded friends and I learned from amazing teachers. Marianopolis showed me what education should be and it lived up to all my expectations!”

Simon Tartakovsky ’18, Honours Pure and Applied Science

Enriched Courses

Enriched courses give you the opportunity to learn extra topics beyond the regular syllabus. Honours Science students are required to take at least three enriched courses. You can choose from:

  • General Biology I
  • General Biology II
  • General Chemistry I
  • General Chemistry II
  • Organic Chemistry I
  • Calculus I
  • Calculus II
  • Linear Algebra I
  • Mechanics
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Waves, Light and Modern Physics

Though you will see the material at a greater depth, you will take the same final exam as the rest of the Science students. You can include in your university applications an official document from the Registrar’s Office certifying that you have successfully completed enriched courses

Advanced Placement

Students who have been admitted to the College and who have covered course material equivalent to the content of a Mathematics or a Science course in the Science program may apply for advanced placement.

Advanced placement exams are normally written either in June, before beginning the program, or during regular exam sessions at the College in December and May. A small examination fee is charged. Application for advanced placement exams can be submitted during the May registration or at a later stage by contacting one of our Academic Advisors. Course outlines and textbook references (as well as a sample exam, when available) may also be obtained.
